Much of discord, dissatisfaction, and frustration is born of not living up to the expectations we have for ourselves or others.
Sometimes those expectations are simply too lofty and will never be met. Or perhaps we continue to bump our expectations up a couple of notches above current performance as an incentive to improve.
If these never-to-be-reached ideals work for you as positive motivators, use them. If, however, they consistently rob you of peace, consider realigning those expectations with your reality to remove these self-imposed conflicts.
I’m not suggesting we stagnate. Consistent improvement is key to sustainable peace. I am, however, suggesting that it’s OK to change what we expect of ourselves and others to align those expectations with current and plausible realities.
Never reaching self-imposed expectations is a recipe for discord, dissatisfaction, and frustration. Meaningfully realigning expectations isn’t the same as “lowering” expectations – it isn’t an admission of failure. It is a harmony-inducing action employed by highly successful people.
